Why are people talking about one of our best players last season as 'cover' this season.

Wake up.

Re: Stuart Downing
All this talk of Cabaye. I called a French mate of mine yesterday, lifelong PSG fanatic, who said that while he was outstanding in the Prem, he has been absolute shit for PSG, only had a handful of games but has been shit every time.
Now I personally haven't seen him play, but based on that comment I'd rather keep Downing, who, overall has been pretty good for us.
We need to be shifting Nolan and Jarvis but if it is going to cost the Dave's money they are more likely to keep them around and use them in Europe in the early stages.
If we do buy Cabaye and he turns out be ace then great, we need to keep Downing though, going to be a long season and he is quality cover at the very least.

"I also worry that we're not going to refresh the squad enough this Summer, similar to what happened two years ago when the club added a few new faces but didn't shift out enough players to stop the squad becoming stale"

This is from the man who complains every time we make a major signing.

Cabayes performance over here just before they sold him was one of the best I've seen and one of our worst. 0-3 halftime I think

Cabaye is better than Downing...no question...

Re: Stuart Downing
sell downing. Get Cabaye. Very simple.
We dont need a winger who plays better in the middle.

If we could get Salah on loan as a winger and get Cabaye as well I think it would be the best summer buying spree ever for us.

Sell him for 7m and buy SALAH.

I'd say he's probably the 2nd highest wage we've got on our books.

For £7m or a figure around that I would take it.

Re: Stuart Downing
>>> Sell one of our best players from last season, who adds excellent depth to our squad makes no sense

Some reasons why it might make sense.

- Age. Especially for a winger, stands to reason that the player should be on the decline.

- Wage. Reputedly on a very high wage, maybe on parity with Carroll. Selling might free up a lot of funds, with FFP implications as well.

- Inconsistency. Has blown very hot and cold over two seasons. Mostly cold imo. Recent form has been poor.

- Inflexibility. The only position he's really shone at is at the tip of the diamond, but there's very little prospect of the diamond formation being viable in the premiership.

- Temperament. There's still, for me, major question marks over his match temperament - when push comes to shove he seems to have an unhappy knack of not delivering.

I also worry that we're not going to refresh the squad enough this Summer, similar to what happened two years ago when the club added a few new faces but didn't shift out enough players to stop the squad becoming stale. So even though I respect Downing's technical skill, I'd be happy if he moved on this Summer.
